About the Pita Pinta:

The Red Mottled Pita Pinta Asturiana (or red pita pintas) are a rare breed from the Asturian region of Spain. Translated from the Asturian language, “pita pinta” means “painted hen” and you can see why when you come across this rare breed of chicken.

We love this gorgeous bird and are happy to have them as one of our core breeds. They’re gentle, sweet, and simply gorgeous. We’ve sourced our gorgeous Red Mottled Pita Pinta Asturiana from Greenfire Farms – the hatchery we trust the most.

When searching to start or add to your flock your family should consider this gorgeous breed – perfect for free ranging. The good news is that you don’t need roosters in order for pita pintas to lay eggs. Pita Pintas lay about 2-3 cream-colored eggs a week. The hens weigh 2.5 kilos and the roosters weigh about 4.5 kilos.

“The pita pinta is a laying breed that lives for a long time (they can reach up to 4 to 5 years old). The average number of eggs laid is 140 per hen per year, with an average weight of 65 g.” Slow Food Foundation
